Create a Bas Relief Effect in Photoshop

This tutorial we will learn to do some etching type

, which will give us a closer result to Relief sculpture. Bas relief effect works are “Semi 3D. These are various way and style in which a relief work can be done. Its generally done on metal, plaster of paris, thermocole, wood etc. We will create a similar effect of that in Photoshop using some filters and other tools.

Lets start with a stock photo of a lady.

What you need to Keep in mind is, every photo will need  some change in the setting which we have used below. You need to do some play around to get this bas relief effect.  Give a try.

Remove the background color.

De saturate the layer.

So you get like this.

Now Add a new layer. Fill it with grey color #757575.

Next apply sandstone texture from the Filter Menu with the following.

So now we have got a textured background.

Change the foreground to White and background color to Black.

Select the “Lady Layer” Go to the Filters Menu once again and select the Ink Outline and change the settings as below.

Click OK to get the Ink Outline Effect .

Add Inner glow by changing the default yellow to black. This is to make a bevel effect basically.

Add outer glow also in the same way to create a shadow around, with the following settings.

After applying these effects we get a result as below.

Lets now add some highlight to the face.

Create a new layer.

By using the brush tool do some touchup  like below on the highlights (upper mount) of the face. Here we are using  and yellow orange color #f8951e.

Now go to the Blur > Gaussian Blur and apply the settings to the layer.

Finally, Create  a new layer and apply radial gradient. this should be the topmost layer.

Change the layer blending option to Hard Light.

Change the transparency level to 65%.

We have got the final result of bas relief effect.
